The V-42 Knife was patterned largely after the WWII British Commando stiletto knife with a few changes to compliment the "FSSF" missions. The men all took great pride in their unit, and had their own knife that was specially designed and issued to it. Their beloved knife became symbolic of the "FSSF" and they even some patches sewed on with types of V-42 Knifeemblems. Right now...everyday all over the world, there are thousands and thousands of U.S. Special Forces/Special Operations Soldiers wearing a patch or crest having an emblem of the V-42 Knife right in the middle of it.
Why was the knife so beloved by the "FSSF" ? The pummel and blades were always sticking and gouging them when they wore it. In fact, they had to file some of the sharper edges down. Why did they adopt it as a symbol of their unit? Well one reason is that because they used it so much during their numerous and highly dangerous night missions, they became known, dreaded, and feared by the enemy. They were even given the nickname of"Black Devils" by the enemy.
The "FSSF " (Forcemen), used their knives so much that in fact, they discovered the tip of the V-42 Knife was too sharp and:
"It was sticking into the enemies' bones, making it harder to pull out."
Hence, many knives had their tips filed down. The sleek, graceful stiletto blade has a serrated groove on the flat rear portion near the blade shoulder where the thumb is placed to aid in thrusting motions. The Forcemen found by experience that they had been given a "superior combat knife" that was light, fast, and extremely lethal when slashing and thrusting at the enemy.
Their nickname and infamous reputation was given by a well trained enemy, and was given with a certain awe, fear and respect.
The "First Special Service Force's" job in their time of war was to kill the enemy. They did it, and did it well.
The V-42 Knife was their symbol for the type of missions they were often called to do. It still is for U.S. Special Operations units.
When I first picked up a V-42 type of stiletto knife, I was impressed by how good it felt in the hand.
